The Ecuadorian government has confirmed that it cut off internet access to Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblowing site WikiLeaks, stating it believed he was using it to interfere in the US presidential election.
The move comes after the release of a spate of emails relating to the Democratic Party from Wikileaks.
On Tuesday, officials released a statement saying that the government of Ecuador "respects the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states" and had cut off the internet access available to Assange because "in recent weeks, WikiLeaks has published a wealth of documents, impacting on the US election campaign".

The confirmation follows one of the more bizarre weeks in Julian Assange's time in the Ecuadorean embassy. Following the organisation uploading pre-commitment, "dead man's switch" codes on the social media site on October 16, many had speculated the Wikileaks editor-in-chief had died.
Speculation began to rise over Assange's health, with some conspiracy theorists bizarrely wondering if a recent visit of Pamela Anderson had something to do with the website's recent activity.
