Steve Bannon has been removed from the National Security Council by President Donald Trump.
Bannon - Trump's chief strategist - was placed on the council in the earliest days of Trump's presidency, a move which was criticised by many people in Congress and Washington's foreign policy elite.
The founder of the ultra-conservative Breitbart News will now step aside after National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster was handed the responsibility for setting the agenda for meetings of the NSC (or the Homeland Security Council).
It was a highly unusual move to give Bannon a seat on the council in the first place - his accession downgraded the roles of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the director of national intelligence, with Bannon in place to oversee Michael Flynn before he was ousted as National Security Advisor.
