Diego Maradona dies aged 60

Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60 from a cardiac arrest.

Maradona was a footballing icon, having guided his native Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986. He was most beloved in Napoli, where he lifted the Italian club to their first ever league title.

Maradona battled substance abuse throughout his adult life. Shortly after his 60th birthday, he underwent surgery on a blood clot on his brain, before being treated for alcohol dependency after coming out of the operation.

On Wednesday afternoon, reports in Argentina said an ambulance rushed to his house after he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.

Taken far too soon, the world has lost a sporting icon and who brought joy to millions.

Rest in peace, Diego Maradona.

Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the globe, with Lionel Messi writing: A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

Premier League clubs have also posted sincere condolences following Maradona’s passing.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Naples has called for the San Paolo stadium to be renamed after Maradona.
