In a video shared on Twitter, the singer and former Disney television star said that "over the past year and half I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work I've had the revelation that I identify as non-binary".

The 28-year-old continued: "With that said I'll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.

"I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to be true to the person that I both know I am and still am discovering."

To identify as non-binary means that a person does not identify as either male or female, and therefore tends not to conform to the gender norms of either.

Lovato said that they "don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson" on the subject. The singer will be speaking to other non-binary people in a video series about gender identity.
