“I’m doing this for those out there haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.”

Demi Lovato has come out as non-binary and will be changing their pronouns to they/them.

In a video shared on Twitter, the singer and former Disney television star said that “over the past year and half I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary”.

The 28-year-old continued: “With that said I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.

“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to be true to the person that I both know I am and still am discovering.”

Lovato went on to tell their followers that “not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras”.

The singer continued: “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all.

“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox.”

To identify as non-binary means that a person does not identify as either male or female, and therefore tends not to conform to the gender norms of either.

Lovato said that they “don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson” on the subject. The singer will be speaking to other non-binary people in a video series about gender identity.
