‘I didn’t realise how big taking my top off would become’

Chloe Kelly has spoken about her now-iconic celebration after scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final.

The 24-year-old etched her name into English football folklore at Wembley when she bagged the winner in extra time for the Lionesses against Germany.

This handed the women’s team their first ever major international tournament triumph, and the first major piece of silverware for a senior England side since 1966.

And just like all iconic goals, it had a celebration to match, as Kelly took her shirt off, whirling it around her head in delirium before being swarmed by her delighted teammates.

The forward has now admitted she has been amazed by how iconic and empowering her celebration has become.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Kelly said: “It was a spontaneous gesture. I wasn’t thinking about [making a statement about] women’s empowerment. I was just celebrating the moment.

“I didn’t realise how big taking my top off would become and what it would do for women.”

She went on to say that the booking she received for the celebration was the “best yellow card I’ve ever received.”

Kelly told the media after the final that she was planning on framing her sports bra, and confirmed this was still the case.

“I have to frame the iconic bra, don’t I,” she said. “I think it’s the way that moment has empowered women that’s made it so iconic, but also we’d just won the Euros.”

Along with the goal and celebration, many also couldn’t get enough of her post-match interview on the pitch, which will also go down as an all-time classic.
