Carrie Fisher has suffered a “massive heart attack” while on a flight from London to Los Angeles, according to reports in the US.

American showbiz site TMZ said Fisher, most famous for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, was taken ill on board the flight to LAX on Friday night.

The site reports that Fisher was treated on board by a medic who happened to be on the plane and stepped in after an appeal by the flight crew.

After landing at just after midday in LA the 60-year-old actress was then taken to hospital by waiting paramedics.

Two passengers who were also on the flight tweeted about the incident after landing.

A United Airlines spokesperson said: “Medical personnel met United flight 935 from London to Los Angeles upon arrival today after the crew reported that a passenger was unresponsive.”

Fisher was on a book tour promoting her newly published work The Princess Diarist which told her story of life behind the scenes while filming the first Star Wars film.
