Bride and groom charge guests £2k to attend wedding – with drinks not included

A bride and groom have been slammed online after charging guests almost £2,000 to attend their wedding.

A story on Reddit left social media users shocked after someone posted a story about their friend ‘Jack’ who had been a guest at the wedding.

In the lead-up to the big day, which took place in the UK, wedding guests received an email thanking them for their RSVP.

At the bottom of the email, there was a link that asked people to ‘click here for payment’.

The original poster’s friend assumed the link was to a honeymoon fund but was shocked to find that when he clicked on the link, he was taken through to a payment page that requested just shy of £2k for his attendance at the wedding.

Thinking it was a scam, he called the wedding venue to let them know but staff instead told him that the couple thanked guests for their contribution to enable them to have their dream wedding.

According to ‘Jack’, he was only informed of this after he had confirmed his attendance.

He emptied his bank account and paid the attendance fee and decided once he was there to make the most of the free bar but it was at this point he realised that there was no food and drink included.

Furthermore, he was then asked for £200 as a tip for the venue.

The Reddit user explained: “He was then informed by the venue that the bride and groom had requested every guest be charged this amount as a tip for the venue. Note this is in the UK where tipping the venue is not a thing that happens (nor does charging guests for attendance for that matter – but does that happen anywhere?).

“Jack had no money left from rinsing his savings for the wedding that he had to negotiate a lower tip amount with the venue.”

The guest decided to do some calculations following the wedding.

The Reddit user said: “After the wedding, Jack checked the cost of the venue and calculated that the cost had been spread amongst the guests but NOT the bride and groom, so they had basically got a free wedding out of it.

“Not only did the bride and groom pass on the costs of a ridiculously priced venue to the guests, after people had RSVP’d, essentially putting the venue above guest attendance, but then they passed on the cost of a tip to the guests WITHOUT TELLING THEM, as a required charge on check out. I’ve never heard of anything so entitled in my life.”

People took to the comments section to slam the pair with one person saying: “Once I saw the payment screen, I would have called and cancelled my RSVP. I don’t care who the bride and groom are to me. You want a specific type of wedding, pay for it yourself. What they did was downright tacky.”

Another commented: “Your friend Jack and every other guest were absolute idiots for just meekly going along with this scam.”

While a third confirmed: “Confirmation from Americans in the comments that this is not a US thing, it’s also not a UK thing, it’s a confirmed entitled people thing.”

We’re not too sure ‘Jack’ will still be friends with the happy couple after that experience!
