Nigel Farage’s news party are polling at 34%
The Brexit Party currently have more support than both Labour and the Conservatives combined ahead of the upcoming EU elections, according to the latest Opinium poll.
Nigel Farage’s new party was only launched in April, but they are currently polling at 34%, with Labour at 21% and the Tories at 11%. The Liberal Democrats – who openly oppose Brexit – are just ahead of the Tories on 12%.
The poll, which asked 2,004 for their views, also asked participants which party they would back in a general election. The Brexit Party have less support in this battle, with 21% of support, 1% behind the Tories – although a different poll conducted by ComRes for the Sunday Telegraph has the Brexit Party ahead of the Tories.
Labour lead the way in general election polling, with 28% of support.
Polling indicates that if a general election were to be held tomorrow, the Tories would suffer their worst result ever.
Andrew Hawkins, the chairman of ComRes, described the poll as a “disaster”, adding: “If the Conservative leadership contenders are not careful, there will be no party for them to lead.”
Brexit has dominated the news cycle ever since the EU referendum in 2016, but despite its constant coverage, this poll revealed that a significant number of people did not know where each main party stood on the issue.
36% of respondents were not aware of the Conservative stance and 38% were not aware of Labour’s.
The UK was recently granted an extension period from the EU, with October the new leaving date. But if we’ve learned anything over the past year, it’s that there are no guarantees.
