A shooting has taken place at a high school in the Texas city of Santa Fe, CNN report.

Witnesses claim that a gunman walked into an art class at Santa Fe High School armed with a shotgun and began firing, with a girl shot in the leg.

Students have been evacuated from the school and the school district remains on lockdown, according to KTRK, the local ABC affiliate.

A junior at the school told CNN students were participating in what they believed to be a fire evacuation when students began hearing shots.

“The teachers are telling us to stay put but we’re all just running away,” 14-year-old Angelica Martinez said.

Police cars were seen arriving at the scene and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents also responded to the incident.

It has not yet been officially whether a suspect has been taken into custody, but a number of sources have reported someone has been detained.

The city of Santa Fe is located between Galveston and Houston in Galveston County, Texas.
