The Prime Minister will be investigated for lying

MPs have backed the Labour-led motion to investigate whether Boris Johnson lied the Commons when he denied lockdown rules had been broken during Partygate.

It means the Prime Minister will be referred to the Privileges Committee, which could find him in contempt of Parliament.

Labour’s motion passed “on the nod”, which means a formal vote was not held.

Earlier on Thursday, two senior tories called for the PM to resign his post – arguing they could no longer defend him to their constituents.

Speaking in the commons, MP Steve Baker said while he originally felt compelled to forgive Boris Johnson, he now feels the “gig is up” and “the prime minister now should be long gone”.

This latest intervention from Steve Baker means a total of 12 MPs are now calling for the PM to go immediately. A further 6 say they support him going into the next election.
