A likely cause has been identified

At least 27 people have been killed while 22 others have suffered heavy injuries as a result of a fire in a Bangkok pub, officials in Thailand have confirmed.

The number of victims was revealed by the Thai prime minister and other officials.

Fire & Rescue Thailand shared a video where a jet-like plume of fire is seen bursting out through the door at the Na Ladprao pub, in the city's Chatuchak district.

It was after 2am local time when reports of the blaze began emerging, and officials said the fire had already burned through the venue by the time rescuers arrived at the scene.

Witnesses reported flames in front of the stage at the venue, while a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration official later confirmed a further 63 were injured in the fire.

Of that number, 22 are in a critical condition, it has been confirmed.

What might have caused the blaze, according to officials

As per Thailand's national police chief, his officers “have established negligence as the primary theory guiding their investigation”.

The initial assessment was that an electrical short circuit in a ceiling air conditioner may have caused the blaze, the city's disaster administration said.

According to police, there may have been issues with fire exits, overloaded wiring and use of flammable materials in renovations to enhance sound.

Meanwhile fire exits may have been obstructed by tables and crates of beer, according to the city's governor.

This was one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in Bangkok in recent years.

At least 13 people were killed by a fire at a music pub in the eastern part of the country in 2022.
