Former President of Peru shoots himself as police come to arrest him

It has been confirmed that he died in hospital

Former President of Peru Alan García has died of a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound.

García shot himself as police came to arrest him over bribery allegations on Wednesday. He was then rushed to a hospital in the Peruvian capital of Lima, where he underwent emergency surgery but died soon after.

His death was confirmed by current President Martín Vizcarra.

A crowd of García’s supporters gathered outside the hospital, and have been held back by police.

García had been accused of receiving bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. He had denied the allegations.

Interior Minister Carlos Morán told press that police arrived at García’s home with an arrest warrant. García excused himself to make a phone call, and went into another room and closed the door.

Police then heard a shot and found García sitting in a chair with a bullet wound to his head.

He was a two-time President of Peru, having served from 1985 to 1990, and then again from 2006 to 2011.

It was during his second term that investigators say took García bribes from Odebrecht, in regards to a metro line being built in Lima.

The construction company has admitted paying almost £23m worth of bribes in Peru since 2004.

García maintained his innocence, saying in a tweet earlier this week that there was no “no clue or evidence” against him.
