Brexit opportunities minister Jacob Rees-Mogg is mulling a shock entry in the Tory leadership contest, according to reports.
The Boris Johnson aficionado would be Rees-Mogg would be the “continuity Boris” candidate, claims an MP who spoke to the Telegraph.
The MP said: “He would be brilliant and probably the only person all the pro-Boris [MPs] could support.”
It's understood that Rees-Mogg had spoken to a number of Tory MPs on Monday morning to ask if he should put his name forward.
However Tory MP Steve Baker, who is running for executive of the 1922 committee, as said he does not believe that Cabinet Office minister Jacob Rees-Mogg could win a General Election.
Speaking to Sky News Baker said: “Well, I understand Jacob Rees-Mogg has been encouraged to stand but it is not too indiscreet to say that as I said to him this morning I don’t think he would win but what he would do is split the votes.”
He added that “much as I love Jacob like a brother I don’t think Jacob would win a general election”.
Last week, dormer Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten pledged his support for Rees Mogg to become the next Prime Minister.
Appearing on TalkTV’s Piers Morgan Uncensored, Rotten said he loves the Brexit Opportunities Minister’s “'World War Two respect, put Britain first' attitude”.
Rees-Mogg later responded to the endorsement saying he was “honoured” even if it was a joke.
