12 dead as ‘worst’ fire in 25 years breaks out in New York apartment block

12 people have died as a result of the “worst” residential fire in 25 years to break out in a New York City apartment.

A one-year-old baby, two children under the ages of 10, and nine adults died as a result of the fire. Four more people are currently being treated in hospital.

The fire broke out in an apartment block in the Bronx on Thursday night.

Officials are calling the incident “historic in its magnitude.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio shared his condolences for the victims’ families on Twitter.

He said:

CNN reported that in a press conference, de Blasio said that he was concerned that more lives may be lost.

“This will rank as one of the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years,” he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
