Bas and J. Cole team up on highly anticipated new song “Tribe”

Will Lavin

“I think I made it”

Bas’ new album Milky Way arrives August 24th but before it does the Dreamville rapper has gifted us with his new collaboration with J. Cole.

Teasing fans with snippets of “Tribe” at his live shows over the summer, Bas has finally dropped the full version. Over a backdrop of laid-back acoustic guitar strums – which feels like something The Pharcyde might have spit over in the 90s – the pair come together on an end of summer relaxation vibe.

Tweeting about the song’s video prior to its release, Bas said:

“When you spend a week in Lagos and think you can come home and shaku in your music video. Someone call @wizkidayo or @djmoma I need guidance.”

Bas and J. Cole have collaborated on numerous occasions – my favourite of which is without doubt “My N***a Just Made Bail” – and this just further proves how well they work together, their chemistry is something not easily replicated.

Speaking to us on a recent trip to London, Bas stated that new album Milky Way is by far his best work yet and admitted that he doesn’t like to do the same thing twice when it comes to creating a full body of work.

“I’d say it’s 100 percent my best work to date,” he began. “I think it’s definitely a huge progression from Too High to Riot. I think they’re two completely different worlds.

“I don’t ever wanna do the same thing twice because it’s no fun for me. Also I feel like as an artist you owe your fans a progression and some type of maturity as you progress.

“And that’s what I mean when I talk about making real shit. Real shit grows organically. As we go through these stages in life you’ve got to actively convey what you’re going through to your fanbase. I think Milky Way does that. Sonically it’s fun, man. It’s just a vibe. I’m really excited to share it.”

Milky Way will be released August 24th.
