Whether you’ve noticed it in your kitchen drawer or talking about it with friends over a pint or two, the long lasting discussion surrounding the ominous spoon that no one uses has fueled the internet for over a decade now.
While there aren’t any studies trying to find a reason why there always seems to be an odd-spoon-out, there are millions of accounts on the phenomenon across the world wide web.
Redditers made note of this with varying accounts, ranging from “I only have one spoon among 20 or so that I actually enjoy using” to “this one spoon I have is stuck to the cabinet”.
Picking up cutlery isn’t all psychologically neutral, with varying shapes, weight, ergonomics and other sensory preferences that can change how comfortable your eating experience is.
The human mouth is extremely sensitive to shapes and sizes, as an object that enters your mouth, a spoon’s shape might be the make or break on your lunch break.
One Frontiers research examined the depth, size and mouth fit of cutlery, with findings showing that spoons shared the biggest differences when it came to individual preferences.
This explains why one spoon can feel wrong from the get-go and call for an immediate substitution.
The same Frontiers research findings explain why we put back a spoon, fork, knife or spork back down.
Participants from the study shared that metal was an overwhelmingly preferred option as it comes off as more substantial and predictable.
Despite the study’s findings, the spoon preference phenomenon doesn’t come down to a T, but it does support that familiarising yourself with one specific piece of cutlery can reinforce one’s choices.
To put it bluntly: you use that one spoon, you don’t like the feel of it and it leads to associating it with a bad eating experience.
What the 2026 study found is that there isn’t one universal bad spoon, it’s a mixture of preference, sensory exposure and familiarity.
If you’ve been able to associate yourself with ‘that one bad spoon’ topic, it’s not irrational, it’s simply your brain telling you which utensil is safest for an optimal scran.
