Being an adult is hard. There are a lot of things they don’t teach you in school. Sure, you had to learn trigonometry and the periodic table. But they didn’t really go into the stuff you actually need to survive in the modern world. You just get dropped off in adult life, with no idea how things like ‘bills’ or ‘council tax’ or ‘ISAs’ actually work. Especially with uncertain economic times ahead, it’s safe to say that many of us don’t know how to make the most of our money. National charity UK Youth is trying to do something about that. The organisation provides young people with access to local youth services to offer support advice and training to help them engage in education, volunteering and employment. Their financial programme aims to tackle this problem head on. The ‘Money For Life’ campaign is a three-year programme aimed at helping our generation get better at money. UK Youth want to equip 16-25 year olds with the knowledge and skills to manage their money effectively. They want to help encourage more Mauricio Pochettinos in the transfer market of life, and less Harry Redknapps. The initiative covers the basics of taking control of your finances. They have launched an innovative website which aims to make these things a lot less scary, giving you the confidence to not just bury your heads in the sand when it comes to financial planning, and actually make the most of their money – from tips on keeping your money safe, to clearing debts. Other topics include student finance, dealing with arguments with friends about money, saving on energy bills, and even setting up a pension. They have also a new tool to help you calculate your #HiddenFortune. Take on their 30 day challenge, cut back on your guilty pleasures and get a step closer to your dream career. And coming soon is Money for Life’s new savings app, Pennies to Pounds, which will be launching shortly. Money For Life isn’t just limited to the digital world either. The programme delivers Money Masterclasses in youth groups across the UK Youth network to provide peer-education and face to face support – and even social action projects through their Community Challenges, offering grants to bring your projects to life.
