Some 63% of reviews of the station’s facilities were negative, placing it eighth in the overall rankings, as reported by Metro.

Reviewers described the station’s toilets as dirty, smelly and poorly maintained, with one branding the men’s facilities “a disgrace”.

Elsewhere in the capital, Waterloo and Liverpool Street each recorded negative scores of 52%, while one visitor called Paddington’s toilets “really gross”.

A major source of frustration was cost: around 65% of all negative reviews mentioned being charged to use facilities despite having already bought a ticket.

The findings will make uncomfortable reading for weary rail travellers already frustrated by the state of Britain’s transport hubs.

At the other end of the table, Victoria was judged to have the best toilets, with just 23% of reviews negative and passengers praising facilities as “spotless”.

The station recently scrapped its payment system, which researchers suggested may have helped its score.

The rankings drew on public reviews from across the UK and Europe, ordering stations by the share of negative feedback about their facilities.
