This is where you can earn the most money in Britain

But there's a catch...

Ben Kenyon

Money makes the world go round – and we’d all love to earn a bit more of it.

Instead of scraping around for enough change to buy a four-pack of value lager before pay day, we want to be still living large and buying in the rounds.

A new report shows where you can expect to earn the most money in Britain – and it’s hardly surprising that London tops the earnings table.

You can expect to earn an average of £675 a week in the capital, according to the Cities Outlook 2016 report.

Four of the top five were all in the south of England – with Crawley (£641), Slough (£636) and Reading (£619) running London close. Aberdeen came fifth in highest paid cities table with an average of £617 a week.

Down at the other end of the scale were Britain’s lowest paid towns and cities – and surprise, surprise they’re predominantly in the north.

Huddersfield wound up on the bottom of the pile with an average weekly wage of £399 – that’s more than £250 shy of what Londoners pick up every week.

Southend was second bottom with £404 followed by Burnley (£416), Mansfield (£417) and Wigan (£418).

It’s a good job the beer’s cheap and the gravy’s plentiful up north, or we’d all be packing our bags and moving to Staines tomorrow.

But there’s one big thing to consider before you up sticks and leave – the cost of living.

One of the biggest monthly drains on your wage is housing. While you might expect to be paid an average of £675 a week in London, you’ll be shelling out an average of £1,980 a month to put a roof over your head.

But up in Huddersfield your monthly rent is just a fraction of that, at around £440. It’s all swings and roundabouts, as they say.
