This is the moment American workers thought they’d won the £1billion Powerball jackpot (Video)

Right numbers, wrong day...

Ben Kenyon

There are no words to describe how devastating this must have been when they found out there had been a horrible f**k up.

But for 20 minutes these American workers who thought they’d won the £1billion jackpot on the Powerball must have been on Cloud Nine. One bloke even quit his job on the spot.

Video footage has been captured of the 42 restaurant staff as they celebrated what they thought was a historic win on the lottery – something that would have bagged each one of them around $23m each (after tax).

They had the right numbers and everything. There was just one big problem – it was for the wrong day.

The workers from Grissini restaurant in New Jersey believed they had struck it rich on Saturday night’s draw after a mate texted them the Powerball lottery results.

The offending Powerball ticket

But the numbers, which had been taken from the Powerball website, were several days out of date.

The numbers they had got on their ticket would have won them the jackpot for the draw the previous Wednesday – but the site had not been updated showing the latest numbers.

“I picked up my phone and start calling out the numbers to everyone here,” barman Charles Poveromo told The New York Post.

“All the numbers matched our tickets. Then pandemonium hit. There was just so much joy, and I can’t put into words the feelings of euphoria that we all felt.”

But when they found out they’d won bugger all, Poveromo described it as “like getting punched in the stomach.”

We feel your pain lads.
