It looks like “Moist” is still the most hated word in the English language

Mel Giedroyc, Great British Bake Off host and all round cake enthusiast, reckons that “moist” is the greatest word in the English language.

You won’t find an elite cake that isn’t moist, which gives Mel plenty of excuses to mention it as often as she likes.

But the rest of the world appears to strongly disagree, as moist was comfortably leading a poll on the most hated word in the English language.

The #OneWordMap was launched by Oxford Dictionaries, asking people from all over the world to condemn the words they disliked the most.

Unfortunately the website has already had to shut down the feature due to ‘severe misuse’, but of the data compiled before then it was moist that led the way in the UK, US and Canada.

According to the BBC, Oxford University Press said the rest of the UK’s top four was made up of “Brexit”, “no” and “British” – with words such as “like” and “can’t” also featuring highly.

More than 10,000 people had contributed to the survey before it was taken down, and Dan Braddock, from Oxford University Press, had said it was the first time an experiment of that nature had been carried out by the company. They probably should have seen the trolls coming.

But don’t think for a second that the global disdain for moist is going to change anything regarding its frequent usage on Bake Off. It’s all part of the package.
