Uncharted movie set for December 2020 release, with Tom Holland playing Nathan Drake

From Spider-Man to Nathan Drake

The long-in-production Uncharted movie finally looks like it is all set to go.

Sony has announced that movie will hit cinemas December 18th 2020, with Spider-Man himself Tom Holland in the lead role.

It will be helmed by 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg, who came onto the project after original choice Shawn Levy dropped out. The script will be handled by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker.

With an actor as young as Holland in the lead role, it looks like we will be getting some sort of origin story for Nathan Drake. According to a report in March, Drake’s sidekick Sully, who despite being portrayed as in his 50s in the games, could be played by Chris Hemsworth or Chris Pine, which would fit with the casting of 23 year old Holland – though older actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were also both reportedly on the shortlist.

The Uncharted movie has been long in production – in 2010 it looked set to be directed by David O Russell and star Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake.

Sure, video game movies don’t tend to come out very well (Detective Pikachu aside), but since Uncharted is basically just Indiana Jones in modern times, there’s no reason why it can’t translate to the big screen.
