Right now, Sam is studying at this location but his journey to becoming a Maester has so far seen him mostly dealing with s**t, piss and puss.
Lovely. Just lovely.
This being said, things look like they're turning around for Jon Snow's best friend.
Not only has he discovered that there's a mountain of dragon glass buried underneath Dragonstone, but he's also working tirelessly to cure Jorah Mormont's greyscale.
In the most recent episode, you might recall the scene where Archmaester Ebrose tells Sam that he is writing a book called 'A Chronicle of the Wars Following the Death of King Robert the First', but after seeing Sam's expression, he takes umbrage with the fact that his young protege dislikes the title.
In Sam's opinion, he would himself name it "... something a bit more poetic."
Game of Thrones fans have long speculated that George R.R. Martin might finish the series in the same way that J.R.R. Tolkien did - Bilbo/Frodo Baggins writing the whole story down before handing the Red Book of Westmarch over to Sam as he headed into the Undying Lands.
Now, if Samwell Tarly follows a similar arch, it's very likely that he might call his own book 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

Essentially, the whole story in Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire would be Sam's account of events, hence the reason why the rotating sun chandeliers in the citadel library are so prominent in the titles .
As we know, the Maesters are only interested in researching, learning and documenting everything that's going on in the Seven Kingdoms. They're ever present, observant and instrumental in documenting the whole narrative.
If this is true, Sam could be the man responsible for telling one of the greatest stories ever.
Naturally, plenty of people have been speculating about this theory.
