There’s a hidden gem on Netflix that’s “beautiful, riveting and incredibly thought-provoking”

100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Interested in a “profoundly unsettling supernatural mystery?”

Work. Done.

Outside? Cold.

TV. Good.

Every weekend, we recommend a new TV show for you to binge watch in your spare time and if you’re finished with Shadow of Truth, The Principal or The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, we have just the thing for you.

With Twin Peaks and the X-Files being revived, it appears that the demand for thought-provoking mysteries is as strong as ever. Take a look at the popularity of shows like The OA or Stranger Things for further proof of this.

If you appreciate atmosphere, tension and plot then The Returned (Les Revenants) on Netflix is definitely for you.

The French show has already been hailed as a “zombie classic” by Entertainment Weekly but while The Walking Dead goes heavy on the gore and violence, this is the complete opposite.

Fabrice Gobert’s gripping show take the time to slowly build an incredibly unnerving sense of dread and tension. To put it mildly, these zombies engage with your brain rather than feast on it.

Ok, what’s it about? Four years after a fatal bus accident, people who’ve been presumed dead reappear in their Alpine village.

We meet the 15-year old girl (Yara Pilart) killed in a car accident four years ago, a groom (Pierre Perrier) who died ten years ago, a young murdered boy (Swann Nambotin), and a serial killer (Guillaume Gouix). What connects them though?

It’s no surprise to see that the French show has already been adapted for an English speaking audience (that version is also available on Netflix) because it’s beloved by every critic that has seen it.

The Hollywood Reporter said that it “defied expectations while rewiring what a “zombie” series can be, The Returned is one of the most intriguing, utterly original offerings of the year.” This sentiment was echoed by TV Guide who praised the fact that it’s a “quietly creepy and profoundly unsettling supernatural mystery.”

If you appreciate shows that make you think and grip you from the first minute, this is for you.
