‘They’re Black as hell!’
Fans of The Simpsons have suggested the famous TV family are actually Black.
Over the course of three decades, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have become arguably the most recognisable TV characters in the world.
This is in no small part down to their now iconic yellow skin. No race has ever been specifically attributed to the family, but many will assume they are white, probably because characters such as Apu and Carl show there are other ethnicities in the world of Springfield and have different coloured skin to match their race.
However, some fans on TikTok have started to theorise that the Simpsons are Black, and believe they have found the proof for this.
TikToker cocoabutterofficial sparked the theory by highlighting that Marge’s long blue hairdo resembles an afro, suggesting she and Homer could be an ‘interracial couple’.
She also pointed out that both of Marge’s sisters, Selma and Patty, have similar hair and “bully Homer over their sister,” the Metro reports.
Someone else agreed with the theory, mentioning an episode where Marge sews some wigs for Bart and Lisa out of previously cut hair, arguing this could be “African rooted” or “French or Creole.”
They added that Marge wearing a bonnet to bed also made her “Black as hell.”
The theory clearly struck a chord with plenty of other fans, with many agreeing in the comments that the Simpson family could indeed be Black.
When one person pointed out the characters’ yellow skin was evidence this argument didn’t stand up, someone else replied: “You’ve never heard the term ‘(high) yellow’ in reference to a light-skinned black woman?”
A storyline from the series has also given credence to the theory. In season 21 episode ‘The Color Yellow’, Lisa discovers she is related to a runaway slave called Virgil, meaning there is Black ancestry in the Simpson family.
As for the reason the Simpsons were designed with their now-iconic yellow skin, series creator Matt Groening has previously explained this.
