The Incredibles 2 breaks record for most successful opening weekend for an animated film

Wil Jones

The Incredibles is maybe the greatest superhero film of all time

Seriously. Yeah, you can shout about all the Dark Knights and Avengers you want, but they’re for nerds, nerd. The Incredibles is a brilliantly funny, sweat, and touching. It is also as exciting as any other superhero film you care to mention – the chase with Dash and the drone things is a masterpiece. It also has an incredible art deco design and look, and the sort of brilliant animation you expect from Pixar.

What we’re trying to say is, The Incredibles is a good film. Controversial opinion, we know.

It has only taken 14 years, but finally the film now has a sequel. Mr Incredible, Elastigirl, Dash, Violet, Jack-Jack and Frozone are all back in The Incredibles 2. The film has been almost as well received as the first one, currently sitting on 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

And it seems audiences are just as enthused about it. The Incredibles 2 has smashed records for an animated movie at the American box office. It took an incredible $180 million in its opening weekend in the US – blowing the previous record holder, Pixar’s own Finding Dory, out of the water.

(Get it, “out of the water”!?! Because Finding Dory takes place in the ocean. Get it? Get it?! Sigh.)

The Incredibles 2  also took an additional $51.5 million from the international market, giving it an estimated worldwide haul of $231 million overall.

It is Pixar’s sixth sequel this decade, coming after follow-ups to Toy Story, Monsters Inc and two more Cars films. But if they keep hitting like this, don’t expect them to stop any time soon.

You might be wondering when you can see it in the UK though – well, not until July 13th. Blame the World Cup, as we are getting Ant-Man and The Wasp a month later than America for the same reason.
