Rumours have been swirling about a reunion
Simon Bird, star of The Inbetweeners, has responded to rumours that the cast of the sitcom could be reuniting for a return.
The Channel 4 series became one of the most popular comedies of the Noughties after hitting screens in 2008, and still has a legion of devoted fans to this day.
The show followed the lives of awkward teenage students William McKenzie (Simon), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley), and went on to become a cult classic.
The series spawned two films, the second of which came out in 2014, but since then we’ve not had any more Inbetweeners content, aside from a painfully awkward reunion show in 2019.
But fans have gotten their hopes in recent weeks after Thomas said negotiations had “happened in various forms” for a reboot of the series.
Referencing his co-stars, he added: “All of us feel it would be nice to do.”
Now, Bird has addressed the rumours – and we’re sorry to say, it’s not good news.
Speaking to the MailOnline, he shut down any suggestions of a reunion, saying no plans were in place for another series or movie.
He told the publication: “I’m afraid to be the one pouring cold water on this but it’s not happening.
“I can tell you emphatically that there are no prospects of a reunion.”
Although he agreed that he and his co-stars would be happy to reprise their roles, he said it was up to the series writers whether any sort of reunion happened.
He continued: “It’s up to the writers, Iain and Damon, and I know they’re both very busy these days.
“It’s not more likely to happen now than it was ten years ago I’m afraid.”
Saying that The Inbetweeners “inhabited a certain time,” Bird stood by previous comments he’d made saying the show wouldn’t be commissioned nowadays.
“So no, there have been no discussions about a new show or film,” he added.
Maybe some things are best left untouched, hey?
