The sequel was only confirmed a few weeks ago.
Netflix has just added The Day After Tomorrow, the 2004 classic disaster movie which is set to get a sequel 20 years later.
Co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich, the blockbuster flick sees climate change on Earth bring about a new ice age.
“After climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is largely ignored by U.N. officials when presenting his environmental concerns, his research proves true when a superstorm develops, setting off catastrophic natural disasters throughout the world,” the plot synopsis reads.
“Trying to get to his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is trapped in New York with his friend Laura (Emmy Rossum) and others, Jack and his crew must travel by foot from Philadelphia, braving the elements, to get to Sam before it’s too late.”
A massive box office hit, the 2004 film was recently in the news thanks to it turning 20 years old and thanks to its director Emmerich revealing that he is working on some sort of sequel to the project.
Just a few weeks ago, JOE interviewed Emmerich about his Prime Video Ancient Rome-set historical epic series Those About to Die.
During the chat, we asked the filmmaker if he would ever consider making a sequel to The Day After Tomorrow – given the success of the original and how its themes regarding climate change continue to resonate.
In response, Emmerich told us: “I have a project called Exodus.”
When we asked if this would be connected to the 2004 disaster flick, he responded:
“It feels like in so far, yes. It’s about, you know, that certain areas of this world you cannot live there anymore because they become too hot and all the animals die and people have to move away.
“And it’s about more the refugee crisis which we all face.”
As for the project’s progress, Emmerich added that the script is currently being worked on.
In the meantime, The Day After Tomorrow is streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK right now.
