Footie fans could be left disappointed

Michael Owen has revealed the reason why he won’t appear on Love Island‘s meet the parents episode.

Fans of this series have been desperate to know whether the football legend, 42, would enter the villa for the special episode to reunite with his daughter Gemma, 19, who is coupled up with Luca Bish, 23.

Those who have watched previous seasons of the reality TV series will know all about this special episode, in which the parents of islanders surprise them by coming into the villa. These meetings almost always cause tears and can sometimes cause tension: if a couple has been through drama in the villa, their parents often have something to say about it.

Sadly for footie fans, Owen has said he will not be entering the villa because he’s busy taking care of other things. He did, however, confirm that his wife Louise Owen will go and see Gemma instead.

Speaking to Sky Sports At The Races after watching his horse Box To Box run, he said: “My wife will do that duty. I’ll represent the horses and she’ll represent the daughter.

“I don’t know what I’ll get from Box To Box. But I know what I’m going to get from my daughter. I’ve fathered her for 19 years so I’m pretty sure what I’m going to get from her,” he joked.

Despite this, it seems fans of Owen shouldn’t give up hope completely. It was only days ago when The Sun reported that Owen’s employer, BT Sport, wouldn’t need him at the end of July due to the lack of football fixtures on the calendar.

So, a source said the end of July could be “a golden opportunity” for Michael to see Gemma in the villa.

“He’s notoriously private and anything could change between now and finals week but, all things considered, the odds on him taking part are better than ever,” they added.

Who knows, maybe a surprise appearance could be on the cards.

Love Island airs every night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
