The King in the North.
Season 6 of Game of Thrones has come to a thrilling conclusion but if you haven’t seen the double-bill of ‘Battle of the Bastards‘ and ‘The Winds of Winter‘, we urge you to so because spoilers are coming.
Cersei Lannister is now the proud owner of the latest bum to sit on the Iron Throne but as well know, it’s highly unlikely that the newly appointed Queen of the Andals and the First Men will last long. Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons might be crossing Narrow Sea but we reckon that Jon’s a better candidate for the Iron Throne.
Here’s why.
1) He’s learned the hard way
Being a bastard, Jon was never fully accepted by Catelyn and other members of society. Unlike other characters that were born into nobility, he had to constantly prove his worth and fight his corner. That’s the reason why he ‘took the black’ and joined the Night’s Watch in the first place.
Remember those famous words that Tyrion uttered to him.
2) Jon has the best mentors
Despite the fact that we’re constantly told that he knows nothing, there’s no denying that Jon has had some brilliant mentors that will ultimately shape how he rules.
Maester Aemon, Mance Rayder, Jeor Mormont, Eddard Stark and Ser Alliser Thorne (in his own treacherous and tough as nails way) have all helped to “kill the boy, and let the man be born”.
3) A man of honour
He kept his Night’s Watch vows, despite the urge to exact revenge on the Lannisters.
Even when Jon was offered everything that he truly wanted by Stannis Baratheon – to be made a legitimate Stark and the Lord of Winterfell in exchange for his support – he still adhered to his Night’s Watch vows.
4) He’s pragmatic and isn’t afraid to make tough decisions
To begin with, he decided to take the black. That’s the hardest decision that anyone will make!
Despite being treated as an outsider in his first few months at Castle Black, Jon still had the strength of character to defend his friend Sam from the bullies in the Night’s Watch.
When Jon was asked to kill Qhorin after both men were captured beyond The Wall, he didn’t think twice about delivering the fatal blow to his fellow crow. Jon also had the foresight and vision to parlay with Mance Rayder, despite knowing that this would be a deeply unpopular decision within Castle Black.
Even when he earned Stannis’ trust, Jon still fired an arrow into the heart of The King Beyond the Wall because he felt that Mance deserved a more dignified way to die than being burned at the stake. The newly appointed King in the North also forgave Houses Glover and Manderley when they refused to fight against Ramsay Bolton.
Another point that could be crucial, rather than execute Melisandre for the murder of Princess Shireen, he sent her into exile because he’s acutely aware that the Red Woman might have a role to play as The Long Night approaches. See, he knows something!
5) Brass balls
To be fair, Jon’s tougher than even the coldest winter on The Wall.
He saved Jeor Mormont from a wight without even thinking twice about it. This was just a sign of things to come though as the future Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch instantly became a leader of men when he led the defence of The Wall against Mance Rayder’s army of Wildlings.
Then came the massacre at Hardhome. Very few people can go toe-to-toe with a White Walker and survive but the sound of Longclaw obliterating the enemy won’t be forgotten by the Night King.
In an episode that was filled with stunning moments, this scene from ‘Battle of the Bastards’ encapsulates everything that’s good about Jon Snow. Defiant, tough and fearless in the face of impossible odds, he won’t stop fighting until his last breath.
6) He’s a hard bastard
Who else could come back from the dead?
7) Few words
Kings and Queens in Game of Thrones have a tendency to talk themselves into trouble. It’s a good thing then that Jon is a man of few words.
8) His allies would be great
Imagine a small council that was made up of Ser Davos (surely the Hand of the King), Lyanna Mormont, Tormond, Sansa and Sam (if he ever left the Night’s Watch)
9) He should be able to dance with dragons
Now that we know Jon is a Targaryen, maybe he can convince his aunt Daenerys (that still sounds very weird) to let him use one of her dragons to defend The Wall against the White Walkers.
Jon’s the very embodiment of fire and ice.
10) He can kick-ass
Who didn’t love seeing Jon beat six shades of shite out of Ramsay Bolton?
11) He’s great at dinner parties
He’s clearly knows something about entertaining.
