Piers Morgan has been tipped to take the reins of This Morning after Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's high-profile bust-up.
The former Good Morning Britain host, who currently presents Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV, has been struggling to attract the sort of audience he enjoyed on ITV since his infamous walk-out.
He could be attracted back to the channel if a position opens up, with This Morning now on the cards.
ITV reportedly called a crisis meeting this week after Monday's show.
Sensing tension between them, bosses are said to have called a meeting to decide how to proceed with the next shows.
A source said: “Social media is used as a barometer to see what the public think. Those in charge were left under no illusion that it was a total disaster. It was painful for the team to work on and just as painful to watch.
“There was a meeting afterwards to discuss how it went that went on for some time. Everyone was just relieved to get it over with, but even if the show continues for some time, it will continue to be a massive headache.”
Speaking to Metro, public relations expert Anthony Burr, who specialises in Publicity, Media, and Crisis Management, believes outspoken broadcaster Piers Morgan would be a perfect fit for the daytime programme, if bosses were thinking about a change in direction.
When asked who he could see dominating the show if Holly and Phil decided to step down, he said: "ITV may well play it safe and promote Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond to fill Phil and Holly’s shoes permanently.
"But if they do want to take the opportunity for a change of direction, and execs feel that it is time for a more hard hitting programme, don’t be surprised to hear Piers Morgan’s or Davina McCall’s names being bandied about."
Insiders have also been claiming that the mum-of-three will likely present This Morning either with her friend Alison Hammond or on her own, although no official announcement has been made.
