We all have our own opinion about what makes Peaky Blinders so incredible. Is it the fact that it's based on a riveting period in history? How about Steven Knight's superb ability to write complex characters? It's also arguable that the show taps into our darkest desires to be outlaws, rogues, and gangsters.
Then again, maybe people love it for the simplest of reasons - it's just a bloody good story that's well acted and directed.
Regardless of your own reason, there's one thing that can't be denied, the emotional connection that audiences have with the Shelby family and as Season 4 reaches its midway point, there's still so much to discover.
At present, we've learned that Aunt Polly's last-minute escape from the gallows has left her shaken and heavily dependent on cocaine.
As we've seen throughout the show, Tommy might be the person that's making the important decisions but it's Aunt Polly that keeps him in check. In fact, none of the women in Peaky Blinders are to be messed with because they're independent, tough and extremely capable.
Steven Knight wasn't going to have it any other way.
“In the period after the First World War, women were incredibly powerful in working-class communities. While the men were away at war, the workplace – including illegal gambling rackets – had been run perfectly well, if not better, by women. But when the war was over, legislation was passed saying men must once more be preferred over women for jobs, and women were quite rightly baffled by the idea they were suddenly being told not to work," he said.
Well, after the previous trailer promised a bloodbath, it's clear that Aunt Polly has rediscovered some of the swag, attitude, and fearlessness that makes her such a remarkable character.
After seeing this footage, we were instantly reminded of that brilliant scene from Season 3 when the Shelby women downed tools and headed out to Birmingham’s Bull Ring.
Take a look.
