Cast your mind back to the end of Season 2 and its final episode.
Tommy has been asked by Major Chester Campbell (Sam Neill) and the pro-treaty Republicans to kill a Field Marshal in a bid to kickstart a civil war in Ireland. It all comes down to events at the Epsom Derby.
After the deed is done, Major Campbell wants Tommy out of the picture because the leader of the Peaky Blinders is no longer of any use to him. In doing so, he asks the Ulster Volunteer Force to kidnap and execute Tommy.
And so it comes down to this. Tommy Shelby, an open grave and three of the UVF's most cold-blooded men.
No way out. BAM!
One of the assassins shoots the other two in the head and leaves Tommy lying in a grave… confused and alive.
The UVF assassin says ‘Get out of the grave, tinker,' before adding that ‘at some point in the near future, Mr. Churchill will want to speak to you in person, Mr Shelby. He has a job for you. We will be in touch."
In a recent Q&A session to launch Season 4, the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, said that this was his favourite scene from the beloved gangster epic.
"I think the end of series 2. I've always loved that line where he says "get out of that fucking grave tinker. There's something about it, I love it. There's something about that whole scene," he said.
Newcomer Aidan Gillen also stated that this was his moment from the show. "It's an obvious one and I know it's a lot of people's favourite scenes, where Tommy ends up in the field with the guys that are about to kill him, but in retrospect, you can see the way out of it, but when I watched it first, I didn't. I thought to myself 'how's he going to get out of this?' He isn't. This is the end and that's what you want in a drama. But he did and it was brilliant to watch. It had a technical and emotional power to it. It was just a punch, a fucking sucker punch. For me, that's my favourite episode and scene."
Can Season 4 manage to top that epic moment? We'll know very soon.
