Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta‘s had a “fantastic time” revisiting their iconic Grease roles in 2019, with it now understood to have been their final spin in character, three years before Olivia’s death on Monday.

The reunion was part of Meet n’ Grease sing-along events in Florida, which saw Olivia and John return as Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko from the popular 1971 film, the Mirror reported. The pair attended sing-along events over three nights, and dressed up for a screening and did Q&A with fans.

Olivia said shortly after the event that they had “a lot of fun”, and later, that she “couldn’t stop laughing. It was just great.”

Olivia also shared a picture of the pair on Instagram at the time, writing that it was their “first time in costume” since making the film. She later clarified that she didn’t wear the exact same clothing.

Speaking about Grease to People in 2020, Olivia said: “That movie is still loved […] The excitement from the people, it was amazing, I couldn’t believe it, people they still love it!”

John added to People: “It was one of the highlights of our lives to see the joy of people unrequited love happening from 40 years of people waiting to be with us.”

The reunion began in West Palm Beach, with the final screening held in Jacksonville.

John said the crowds had been “amazing” and, reflecting on it a month later, called it a “glorious experience” for them both.

“The key was we got to look like Sandy and Danny. […] We’re coming there as Sandy and Danny and then people will get a real kick out of it,” he said.

Olivia wore her character’s yellow skirt and white blouse before changing into a black leather jacket and leggings, while John wore his character’s signature look – black trousers, a T-shirt and a leather jacket.

The event is now thought to be the last time Olivia and John reunited in character. It wasn’t, however, the last time they met. They attended a fundraising event for G’Day USA held in early 2020, the Mirror noted.

Olivia passed away Monday, aged 73, with her husband, John Easterling, sharing the news.

She was surrounded by  family and friends at her ranch in California.
