The acclaimed crime thriller series Mr. Mercedes, which is based on a trilogy of novels by legendary author Stephen King, is now streaming in its entirety on Prime Video.

Adapted to the screen by the incredibly prolific David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, Presumed Innocent), the show stars Oscar-nominee Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) as Bill Hodges – a retired cop in an Ohio town haunted by an unsolved case.

This was when a mysterious man – dubbed Mr. Mercedes – claimed the lives of 16 people when he drove a stolen Mercedes through a line of job-seekers at a local job fair.

When the killer (Harry Treadaway, Penny Dreadful), hell-bent on leaving his mark on the world, begins taunting Hodges with a series of lurid letters and emails – a dangerous cat-and-mouse game ensues.

Also featuring amongst its main cast Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight), Justine Lupe (Succession) and Mary Louise Parker (Red), Mr. Mercedes ran for three seasons between 2017 and 2019 on the now defunct US channel Audience.

Holding an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, the show was acclaimed throughout its run – with King’s typically twisted take on a detective story, the lead performances of Gleeson and Treadaway and the series’ dark humour being singled out for praise.

You can read a sample of some of these glowing reviews right here:

AV Club: “Thanks to these capable actors, the stately buildup provided by the first half of this series makes the wait for the payoff worth it.”

Hollywood Reporter: “Mr. Mercedes is a fine example of something that has been less frequent over the years — an effective Stephen King adaptation carried by strong performances and smart writing choices.”

NPR: “David Kelly and Stephen King have been entertaining the masses for many decades now, yet in Mr. Mercedes, they’re both doing some of their best work in years.”

RogerEbert.com: “This is an all-star crew operating at near the peak of their abilities. It makes for a tight, terrifying story of a retired cop and the madman who got away but won’t go away.”

Mr. Mercedes hasn’t always been the easiest show to check out on this side of the pond – though it was previously on Disney+ for a brief period.

Hopefully now that it can be watched on Prime Video, it will find a bigger audience.

All three 10-episode seasons of the series are streaming on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland right now.
