‘I’m not seeing enough people talk about it’

Jonah Hill’s  new documentary on Netflix where he quizzes his therapist in an effort to help other people with their mental health has been a hit with fans and critics, receiving 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The doc, by the Wolf of Wall Street actor, sees him turn the camera on his friend and long-time therapist, Phil Stutz, to discuss his own struggles and the tools he’s been given to help deal with them.

The film, which Hill also directs, sees the actor discusses Stutz’s methods and how to apply them in various scenarios, flipping their typical doctor-patient dynamic.

The documentary sees both Hill and Stutz speak very candidly about their mental health as they strive to make support for mental health more accessible, per IMDb.

Stutz is one of the world’s leading psychiatrists and has been treating patients for over a 40 years.

The film, IMDB says, explores Stutz’s life and walks the viewer through his signature visualisation exercises, The Tools.

“Featuring candid discussion of both Stutz’s and Hill’s personal mental health journeys, alongside the lighthearted banter of two friends from different generations, the film beautifully frames The Tools and the journey toward mental health in a manner that’s accessible to anyone whether or not they are actively seeking help.”

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are credited as producers.

Fans have been taken in by the documentary, calling it “extraordinary”.

One person wondered why more people weren’t talking about it, writing: “If you’re even remotely interested in mental health, therapy or even just biographies of interesting people, you should absolutely watch it.”

A second added: “Stutz is the best thing this year. I had to keep pausing it to think things through. Insanely, instantly helpful. A joy to watch but also experience. Hit it.”

Actor Hank Azaria has also spoken out in favour of Stutz’s “tools”, revealing that he started seeing the therapist when he was around 25 years old and had “so much anxiety that I couldn’t even audition any more”.

“Over the next 20 yrs he saved my life, mind & soul more times than I can count- what a brilliant and hilarious man. I still use his ‘tools’ every day.”

The documentary has received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from 17 reviews from critics.

Stutz is available to watch on Netflix right now.
