Here’s why Trading Places is a comedy masterpiece

Paul Moore

“Looking good Billy Ray!”

Eddie Murphy turns 56 today and in a career that has spanned a plethora of hit films like Coming to America, Beverly Hills Cop, his famous stand-up comedy duo of Raw/Delirious and countless others- it’s incredibly hard to choose his best work.

This being said, there’s no denying that the appeal of the superb Golden Globe-nominated comedy, Trading Places.

Under the direction of John Landis, this is a piece of work that shows two superb comedians at the height of their powers, the whip-smart stylings of Murphy and Dan Aykroyd’s penchant for sheer lunacy.

Here are some of our favourite Eddie Murphy moments in the film.

1) Miracles can happen.

Ever since he stepped on that landmine back in ’72, Billy Ray has been blind and crippled.

Praise Jesus, he can walk! It’s a miracle.

Murphy’s skills as a physical comedian are exceptional here.

2) It’s all about the spirit of friendship.

“Didn’t I tell you that the phone in my limousine is busted ?!!

Take a look as Billy Ray makes some new friends in the prison cell.

YEAH, that is a very young Gus Fring in this scene.

YEAH!

3) This look.

This is till one of the greatest ‘4th wall breaks’ in cinema.

See, look at all the free stuff that Billy Ray gets.

We love the fact that he tried to steal it instantly.

4) This line.

Farting in the bathtub is just as good as a Jacuzzi.

5) Clearing parties out.

Without a doubt, this is the best way to get your guests to leave.

What a punchline.

6) People are always kind.

Nenge Mboko had great fun at the Haile Selassie Pavilion. Endlessly quoted, rarely matched.

7) That ending

Looking good, Billy Ray!
