Here’s what the final scene in The Defenders means for the Marvel TV universe

Paul Moore

The war for New York is escalating.

If you still happen to be binging on Netflix’s latest TV show in the Marvel Universe, consider this to be a spoiler alert warning.

How much does Matt Murdock love Elektra? Enough to let the entire building of Midland Circle Financial collapse on top of him, but after that dramatic ending, fans are asking one thing. Is Daredevil coming back?

Well, the answer is yes because Season 3 has already been approved – it shoots in October – but what aboput that cryptic ending which saw Matt Murdock lying in comatose state at some sort of hospital/nunnery.

The nun keeping vigil over him tells someone to “get Maggie.”

Comic book fans will know that the Maggie in question here is Sister Maggie, better known as Maggie Murdock – Matt’s mother. Granted, we were all led to believe that she died when Matt was young, but she’s very much alive.

About her return, Marco Ramirez, showrunner on The Defenders, has said: “I can’t confirm anything! I can say that visually that shot at the end of Daredevil’s story was definitely an homage, as were a couple of other scenes, to the comics. That’s one of my favorite Daredevil images, so regardless of who any of the characters are, I went to the production meeting saying this is the image we’re going for, we’re going to feel like this, and that came from that image that I purposely borrowed from the comics.”

Maggie Murdock first appeared in the Daredevil story arc ‘Born Again’ and without giving too much away, it’s a doozy that dips into Matt’s recent crime fighting past. Maggie also appears again in the ‘Guardian Devil’ arc, written by Kevin Smith.

Regarding Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, that final scene of them in the bar dropped a very obvious hint that their romantic spark isn’t extinguished just yet. Comic book fans will know exactly what’s in store for them.

This being said, we’re happy to see that Jessica has reopened Alias Investigations and as for Luke, he still has the issue of Mariah Dillard and Shade in Harlem to deal with.

Oh yeah, a certain someone is also returning to make Jessica’s life a living nightmare.

Elsewhere, Danny Rand finally seems like he understands the responsibilities that come with being the Iron Fist but we all know what’s coming next in the Marvel TV Universe, punishment and lots of it.

Oh yes! New York will bleed because Frank Castle is coming back.

Rumors indicate that the series will arrive on Netflix sometime in November.

Here’s the teaser that debuted at the end of The Defenders.

Regarding Season 3 of Daredevil, Charlie Cox has already said that the lessons from The Defenders will shape his character in adventures to come.

“He can’t do all this alone. And that’s to say maybe some teamwork – He’s actually going to relinquish [some responsibility]. So whatever lessons he learns in The Defenders will then play into I think season three,” Cox said.

Intriguingly, he has teased us all with a villain that he would like to  appear. Speaking with Screengeek, he said: “It’s no secret, I’ve said it before and I get in trouble every time I say it, I’d like to see Bullseye make an appearance at some point. I think it’s a really interesting opportunity. Deborah Ann Woll obviously does not want Bullseye to show up for obvious reasons. Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra, doesn’t want Bullseye to show up either.”

Ominously, Marco Ramirez also told EW that The Hand might not be gone forever. “I don’t know if it’s the end of the Hand forever — who knows what will happen in the future — it just felt like it’s the end of this story in the lore,” he said.

We’re pumped for what’s coming.
