Here are some excellent new titles on Netflix that will get you through the week

Anvil: The Story of Anvil

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 98%

Plot: Documentary about the Canadian metal band Anvil. At 14, Toronto school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, went on to become the “demigods of Canadian metal,” releasing one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982’s “Metal on Metal.” It went on to sell millions of records, but Anvil’s career didn’t flourish afterwards. Instead, they went straight to obscurity

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A documentary about the highs and lows of the human spirit. The rise, fall and rise of these two rockers that never gave up will grip you.

You’ll be glad you watched it.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia –  Season 12

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 100%

Plot: We warned you that the funniest comedy on TV was coming back! If you’re not familiar with The Gang then you really need to catch up on their depraved antics, you jabroni.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: Fans of the show will love the episodes ‘Making Dennis Reynolds A Murderer’ and ‘The Gang Goes to a Water Park’

The Descent

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%

Plot: A group of close female friends on a yearly adventure vacation find themselves trapped and hunted in a series of caves by an unknown force that lurks in the shadows.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A horror that’s claustrophobic, tense and gory.

The Similars

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%

Plot: On the rainy night of October 2, 1968, eight people waiting in a remote bus station for a bus heading to Mexico City start experiencing a strange phenomenon. Threatened by paranoia and fear, the strangers show the best and worst of themselves as they try to unravel the mysterious condition that is invading each of them like a virus.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A trippy and surreal horror that’s happy to homage sci-fi and fantasy. Imagine the Twilight Zone and the best of horror films the 60’s and 70’s.

Eastern Promises

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 89%

Plot: A Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth leaves clues to a midwife in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A visceral, intense and brutal crime thriller that focuses on the menacing world of Russian gangsters.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 88%

Plot: A struggling comedy writer in New York City (Jesse Plemons) returns home to Sacramento to care for his dying mother (Molly Shannon) in this affecting family drama from Saturday Night Live writer Chris Kelly, marking his directorial debut.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A smart, subtle and bittersweet look at tragedy. The performances are excellent.

Trance

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 68%

Plot: Simon (James McAvoy), a fine art auctioneer, teams up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions of dollars, but after suffering a blow to the head during the heist he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Frank (Vincent Cassel) hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb (Rosario Dawson) to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. As Elizabeth begins to unravel Simon’s broken subconscious, the lines between truth, suggestion, and deceit begin to blur

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: Some critics hated it, others really liked it. Entertaining and forgetabbe in equal measure. Still, Danny Boyle operating at 68% is still better than most.

If these titles don’t take your fancy, maybe some of these older recommendations might.
