Game of Thrones has cast a new character and he’s vital in the war for the Iron Throne

Paul Moore

Daenerys’ quest has just been made a little bit harder.

With only six episodes to go, Game of Thrones is done setting up its various alliances and meetings because the Great War is coming and the dead come with it.

While Jonerys and Jaime Lannister are heading north to battle the Night King and the army of the dead, Cersei Lannister has almost gone ‘full Mad Queen’ after reneging on her word and making an enemy out of almost everyone in the Seven Kingdoms.

This being said, Cersei is arguably the shrewdest player in the Game of Thrones and during the season finale, The Dragon and the Wolf, we finally got a glimpse at her masterplan for maintaining control over Westeros.

After repaying their debts and securing new finances from the Iron Bank, Cersei has ambitious plans to expand the Lannister armies and navies by hiring the Golden Company.

We’ve already explained their significance and history throughout the Song of Ice and Fire series – essentially, they’re a large and highly skilled mercenary army (complete with elephants) that were founded at the end of the First Blackfyre Rebellion- but it appears that Euron Greyjoy’s expedition to pick up these mercenaries has been successful because German actor Marc Rissmann has been cast in the role of Harry Strickland, leader of the Golden Company.

The renowned and reputable Game of Thrones fansite Watchers on the Wall broke the news after they noticed his Spotlight CV and a post from his agency.

As reported previously, this was one of the positions that the producers were looking to fill. The character is described as an authoritative, fit, cool and charismatic military type and  he’ll be appearing in two episodes of season 8.”

In the novels, the Golden Company are reputed to have never broken a contract. Their motto is “Our word is good as gold” and with 10,000 men, several thousand horses and a number of elephants, Cersei looks like she has just landed herself a very powerful ally.

Beneath the gold, the bitter steel.

Will it be a bitter end for Cersei’s enemies?
