At the present moment, Al Pacino could do with some good news because his latest film, Hangman, is about to receive a very rare honour in Hollywood.
The feature, which also stars Brittany Snow and Karl Urban, has earned a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes but we think his next film will be the exact opposite.
We’ve kept our eyes on The Irishman for quite some time now and it’s clear that Netflix knows that they’ve got a bonafide hit on their hands – that’s reflected in the fact that the streaming giant has spent a cool $105m (£82m) on the film.
Set to be released in 2019, Scorsese will be reuniting with some of the absolute best actors in the world. De Niro, Pacino, Pesci, Keitel. We’re in heaven!
The movie – based on the book, I Hear You Paint Houses, by Charles Brandt – will tell the story of Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a mob hitman who among other things is claimed to have been involved in the 1975 disappearance of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, a mystery that still remains unsolved.
Speaking with The Independent, the director of The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street said that his new movie will be very different to the other gangster films that he has made.
“This is different, I think it is. I admit that there are – you know, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Casino‘ have a certain style that I created for them – it’s on the page in the script actually. Putting Goodfellas together was almost like an afterthought, at times I was kind of rushing, I felt I’d already done it because I’d played it all out in terms of the camera moves and the editing and that sort of thing. The style of the picture, the cuts, the freeze-frames, all of this was planned way in advance, but here it’s a little different.”
After previous images were released, we finally got a glimpse of De Niro and Pacino together. What’s notable is the fact that De Niro is wearing high platform shoes to appear much taller than Pacino.
Interestingly enough, De Niro — who’s 5’10” — is already naturally taller than Pacino, who’s 5’7″.
It’s that attention to detail like that which makes us confident that we’ve got another gangster classic on our hands.
The Irishman could be very, very special.
