Disney+ has released the first two episodes of its much-anticipated new mystery thriller series A Murder at the End of the World.
The show revolves around the character of Darby Hart (Emma Corrin, young Princess Diana in The Crown), an amateur sleuth and tech-savvy hacker described as "Gen Z Sherlock Holmes".
Alongside eight other guests, Darby is invited by a reclusive billionaire (Clive Owen, Children of Men) to participate in a retreat at a dazzling but snowy and remote location.
"When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must use all of her skills to prove it was murder against a tide of competing interests and before the killer takes another life," the plot synopsis reads.
The seven-part series was created, written and directed by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (the pair behind the cancelled-too-soon Netflix mindbender The OA) and, along with Corrin and Owen, also features amongst its cast Marling, Alice Braga (Queen of the South), Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), Joan Chen (Twin Peaks) and Raúl Esparza (Hannibal).
Initially set for a release in August before being delayed due to this year's actors' strike, A Murder at the End of the World has now debuted on Disney+ in Ireland and the UK and is getting very positive reviews, scoring an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Here is a sample of some of the glowing write-ups from critics about the show:
Consequence: "Nancy Drew with the Dragon Tattoo, in the best possible way."
Paste: "When the twists and upsets begin to drop, they hit hard - filled with clever pay-offs and hard right-turns that Marling and Batmanglij maneuver with deft grace."
Time: "Marling and Batmanglij have so thoughtfully built an inquiry into the consequences of AI and surveillance capitalism within the framework of a whodunit, yielding a mystery both current and timeless."
Washington Post: "A Murder at the End of the World holds its own — all while enacting some heart-rending correctives to the genre’s bloodthirsty tendencies."
The first two episodes of A Murder at the End of the World are available to watch on Disney+ in Ireland and the UK now, with the rest of its episodes following in weekly instalments.
