Fans slam House of the Dragon finale as ‘the worst since the invention of TV’

Warning: spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2

Viewers all had the same complaint

Fans were all left with the same feeling and complaint after watching the finale to season two of House of the Dragon.

The eight and final episode of the second season aired in the UK on Monday night, as fans tuned in to see what dragon-themed action would take place to round of the series.

After seven episodes following the drama and squabbling of the Targaryen family, viewers hoped to get some action in the last episode, similar to that seen earlier in the season.

Except, there wasn’t any.

The episode largely consisted of more conversations between characters and pieces being moved into place for battles to come. Sure, the story and narrative progressed – and the show once again featured some brilliant performances from all involved – but as far as season finales go, many found it to be an incredibly underwhelming affair.

And some went as far to label it one of the worst finales in TV history.

Reacting to the episode on X, one person wrote: “House of the dragon season 2 finale is up there with the worst finales since the invention of TV shows.”

Another said: “House of the Dragon can’t be serious with this finale.. we waited 2 years for that?”

Referencing one particularly weird storyline of the final episode, a third commented: “They really made us watch a mud fight instead of giving us a satisfying ending to this season of House of the Dragon.”

It wasn’t just fans who were unsatisfied with the ending to season two. Critics have also slammed for show for the way it ended the series.

In their review of the finale, the Guardian said: “It’s a frankly baffling episode of television, almost aggressively anti-climactic, a 69-minute tease with a payoff that we’ll have to wait two years for. What were they thinking?”

`IGN’s review reads: “In terms of story and drama, this eighth episode was a triumph – or would have been had it arrived two or three episodes ago. But for a season finale to be all cliffhanger and no spectacle is close to unforgivable.”

Meanwhile, Forbes labelled it a “hugely underwhelming season finale,” and said it would have been a “really amazing penultimate entry to season 2.”

Don’t worry guys, we’ll only have to wait about two years to see the pay-off…
