The new era of Sony gaming kicked off this week with the unveiling of two new Playstation models.
The PS4 slim, and the super powerful PS4 Pro were shown off at the PlayStation Meeting 2016 livestream event and both machines were looking rather lovely.
The Playstation 4 Slim will now be the de facto Sony console. The ‘standard console moving forward’, the Slim is a smaller, more energy efficient version of the previous Playstation 4 consoles.
Shipping in ‘most territories’ from September 15, the new model will come at the reasonable price point of £249.
In order: the current PS4, the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.
But it’s the PS4 Pro that’s the big announcement. Rumoured for months, the console (previously codenamed the Playstation Neo), will serve as a .5 update on the Playstation 4.
Sony were keen to stress that the PS4 Pro was not replacing the standard Playstation 4, but instead ‘take the PS4 experience to new heights’.
What that means is the PS4 Pro will come with an upgraded GPU (double the power in fact), a 1TB hard drive, and support for 4K and HDR (High Dynamic Range -super-sharp, high-definition that runs at four times what the current Playstation 4’s speed).
The PS4 Pro will be available from 10th November at the price point of £349.
Sony were keen to show off their new toy with some impressive footage of upcoming games Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect Andromeda.
All well and good for the Christmas shopper crowd, but what does this mean for gamers with the current, bog standard Playstation 4 console?
In an unexpected bit of good news, Sony announced that all PS4 consoles will be getting a firmware update to allow them to support HDR..
A number of patches will also be coming to already released games to make them ‘forward compatible’. Your copy of Uncharted 4 will be getting a lovely spruce up.
Add to that improvements to the upcoming PlayStation VR headsets and it’s clear Sony are looking to make the next gaming leap this winter.
