The film features a famous athlete in one of its leading roles.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 7 August) is Double Team, the 1997 buddy action flick starring legend of the genre Jean-Claude Van Damme, alongside basketball player Dennis Rodman.
JCVD stars in the film as a CIA agent who is interned to a strange penal colony for spies after failing to kill an international terrorist (Mickey Rourke).
“Escaping from his island exile, he teams up with a flamboyant arms dealer (Rodman), with them setting out to find the terrorist and rescue the agent’s family,” the plot synopsis reads.
“Together they’re a two-man arsenal… with enough voltage to rock the free world.”
The American directorial debut of legendary Hong Kong action filmmaker Tsui Hark (Once Upon a Time in China), Double Team was very poorly received upon release – with many critics taking issue with its convoluted plot and the variety of basketball puns Rodman’s character makes.
That said, in the years since, it has become a bit of a cult fascination in film circles for these reasons, as well as Hark’s stylish direction.
Double Team is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 9pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play and Rakuten TV.
Here’s the other movies airing on TV tonight:
