Sources close to White said that while she suffered from a stroke, she was “alert and coherent” before dying peacefully in her bed, reports TMZ.

Her death was initially confirmed on New Year’s Eve by close friend Jeff Witjas, who said: “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever.”

Celebs shared their condolences while reminiscing about White’s life. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who also worked with White on The Proposal, tweeted: “The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret.”

Sandra Bullock also paid tribute to the actress, noting that: “I don’t drink vodka … but I will tonight, on ice, with a slice of lemon with a hot dog on the other side and just be okay being sad.”

After paying tribute to one of White’s favourite food and drink combinations, Bullock told People magazine: “I’ll have to buy some rose-colored glasses because Betty was that for all of us.”

TV host Andy Cohen tweeted: “Tonight we will raise MANY glasses to the WONDERFUL legacy of Betty White!!!”

Similarly, Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren said: “A few yrs ago at an animal charity event I bid on a day at the zoo with Betty White.

“Not only was she a legend but a fierce advocate for animal rights. Both the humans and the animals are so sad today Betty.”

While White died just weeks before her 100th birthday, it’s clear she will live on in the memories of her friends and fans.
