If you imagined a supernatural Mare of Easttown, you’d be close to the vibe of the 2021 film.
Disney+ has added Antlers to its service, a gripping and haunting mystery horror thriller from 2021.
Based on a short story by Nick Antosca (Channel Zero), the movie is set in small-town Oregon and centres upon a teacher (Keri Russell, The Diplomat) and her local sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons, Game Night) who discover a young student is harbouring a dangerous secret.
When they ultimately learn the whole truth about the boy’s family, things take a terrifying turn.
Antlers was co-written and directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass) and was produced by horror icon Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak).
The film earned decent notices from critics upon release – with its story (blending modern issues like poverty and addiction with folklore), its gloomy atmosphere, its intense performances and its haunting closing moments being singled out for praise.
If JOE had to sum up the vibe of Antlers, we’d describe it as a supernatural Mare of Easttown.
You can read a sample of some of the positive reviews for the mystery flick below:
Chicago Sun-Times: “A scary story of being traumatised by a monster – and by reality.”
ComingSoon.net: “Antlers remains a well-crafted thriller with some excellent scares and a bone-chilling ending.”
Entertainment Weekly: “Plemons and Russell are both too fine as actors not to hint at deeper wells for their damaged characters, and the mood is so oppressively well-wrought that the very soul of the movie seems to be made of leaf rot and despair.”
Newsday: “It lacks the art-house stamp of Robert Eggers’ The Witch or Ari Aster’s Midsommar… but the movie distinguishes itself with a pervasive air of ruin, decay and sorrow.”
Antlers is streaming on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland right now.
