Nadia Whittome was sacked from working as a carer during the coronavirus lockdown after speaking out about the need for and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). A member of parliament for Nottingham East since the 2019 general election, Whittome had previously worked as a carer.
After the outbreak of COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown across the United Kingdom, she had decided to return to her old line of work in a bid to help those in need during the crisis, but her words to the media about the lack of PPE in the healthcare sector led to her being removed from her position.
We spoke to her about her dismissal, what it means for her former colleagues and why frontline workers deserve more than just a weekly applause.
