England fans react to the news they’ll be playing Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016

Carl Anka

Football… bloody hell.

The final matchday of Group F has proven to be one of the most exciting rounds of Euro 2016 games to date. Hungary drew 3-3 in a thrilling clash and Iceland came out 2-1 winners against Austria with a lovely last minute goal.

Up meant down, left meant right, the only consistent thing was Ronaldo being annoyed at his teammates.

Come the final whistle, the results meant that in what was supposed to be more straight forward groups, the favourites Portugal finished 3rd and tournament ‘dark horses’ Austria… and Iceland have finished runners up, meaning they will be facing England in the round of 16 on Monday 27 June.

And England fans response was rather… mixed, with a number of fans bullish about their chances of taking on Iceland, where once they feared playing Portugal.

Then there were the England fans who worried how Roy would line up an England side against another team who would look to play deep and leave England to rack up 70% possession.

Then of course came the Arsenal fans…

And the historians to remind us of previous England vs. Iceland matches.

Sort of.

Still, with a potential last 16 match against a Portugal side that’s finally got Ronaldo firing avoided, England fans can be quietly confident about their match against Iceland on Monday 27 June.

Right?
