No prizes for guessing number one.

If you’ve already guessed Snapchat, then don’t go expecting a trophy or anything; it’s hardly a major surprise that it proved to be the most popular free iPhone app in 2016 in Apple’s annual ‘best of’ list.

With Instagram basically replicating a number of its most prominent features, Snapchat has had to evolve pretty rapidly in the last 12 months and it has done so with the launch of the likes of Snapchat Spectacles and Memories in 2016.

Instagram also made the top five along with Messenger, Facebook and Pokémon Go, which proved wildly popular for a brief period during the summer months.

The rest of the top ten isn’t too surprising either, with YouTube, Google Maps, Spotify and Netflix all warranting a mention.

As far as paid apps are concerned, Heads Up!, a game made famous by Ellen DeGeneres, came out on top of the list, with apps as varied as Face Swap Live, 7 Minute Workout Challenge and Geometry Dash also making the top ten.
